Walk a mile in my shoes and you'll know how many steps you can log in the magical city of Madrid, its surroundings and nearby Castilla la Mancha. While we won't be going on a linear route with points A to Z, we will be traveling to several places to discover, taste and learn how so much connects to our classic hero Don Quijote de la Mancha.
Amanda Buttinger here...I've been a Rick Steves Europe tour guide and guidebook researcher for 15 years. While waiting to take you all back out on the road, I've been doing virtual travel gatherings with gathertotravel.com
I've lived in Spain for 23 years, more than half my life, yet I am still fascinated by the smallest of details of a building, how to order food, how the sun moves across the skyline and the simplicity of daily Spanish life.
Alcalá de Henares, Delving deep in Madrid, Sierra of Madrid, Torrelodones, San Lorenzo el Escorial, Consuegra, Toledo and Valdepeñas wine and Manchego cheese. Who said wine and cheese aren't destinations!
We'll be hitting the streets, parks and museums of Madrid bringing the 16th and 17th century context of Don Quijote into view. Then we will adventure further on to the north of Madrid, and head down towards La Mancha for some cheese and wine with windmill giants for company.
You are interested in joining us on our virtual adventure in Spain? We can't wait, let's go!
Join us for some fun in and around Madrid!
June 5-19, 2021
We start on Saturday, June 5 with a live virtual event with Amanda who will be on location in Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of Cervantes.
The general format of information in written and video content each week:
We are doing virtual excursions in and around Madrid. If you wish to to participate in a walking (or biking) challenge, set a goal that works for you! You may decide upon an alternate pacing schedule if you want to have more gentle pace. Walking, running, yoga, cleaning your house, grocery shopping - time spent doing most all sorts of activities add up to mileage. Set your pace and keep track on your own with a Fitbit or keep track as you wish.
You may also prefer to not partake in the virtual walking part of the experience and enjoy the cultural and historical aspects of the experience- it's all good!
